Recommendations...two forensic psychologists, one great podcast!

Make a Recommendation Monday: [7/20/2020]

Today’s recommendation is a podcast that I just started recently listening to. For all of you true crime fans out there, this one is for you!

“L.A. Not So Confidential: The Premier Forensic Psychology Podcast” is the name of the podcast that I would recommend you start listening to!

As you can tell from the title of the podcast, it is geared toward forensic psychology interests (which is what I went to graduate school for). The podcast is hosted and created by Dr. Scott and Dr. Shiloh, two friends who ended up in the field of forensic psychology coming from two completely different backgrounds. Dr. Shiloh comes to the field after working, among other things, as a patrol police officer for seven years. She comes from a family of law enforcement, with parents who were each an investigator. Dr. Shiloh works with offenders pre and post prison, with evaluations and treatment. She also recently began working in law enforcement psychology. She works in clinical services and consulting/training for large law enforcement agencies. Dr. Scott comes to the field after being in the entertainment field, working as an agent’s assistance, casting director, talent manager, line producer. He is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT). He has been an expert in the area of family forensics, working in the area of family law, child custody evaluations, conflict resolution, and trained in crisis negotiation. Both hosts have engaged in crisis negotiation training through the FBI!

Dr. Shiloh and Dr. Scott use their knowledge base and interests to discuss criminal cases with psychological perspectives, both true crime (actual cases) and media-related cases (movies/TV series). They also invite experts from law enforcement and mental health to further delve into the topics they discuss. Forensic psychology is applying psychological knowledge, techniques, and perspectives to both criminal and civil legal systems.

Their first episode after the intro one, episode 1.5 starts off right away with discussing psychopathy, sociopathy, and antisocial personality disorder. Episode two begins to delve into cases by discussing the concept of people who lead a “double life”.

Tune in to their show to learn more about criminal behavior, psychology, and the legal system! You will be sure to walk away with new knowledge and new perspectives. Although they are both professionals, they are also friends and therefore there is some lightheartedness to their conversations which makes it all the more enjoyable to listen to!

***How do I find my new recommendations?***

For all types of media, I will always take recommendations from friends and colleagues. Also, when listening to podcasts, the hosts will sometimes make recommendations based on people they collaborate with or meet through events. For example, I learned about this week’s podcast recommendation through listening to Women & Crime, and this one came through as an ad. For my books, I use an app called “Goodreads” which you can add all of the books you have read, are reading, and want to read to easy to browse “shelves”. This app can offer suggestions, as well as connect with others who can recommend books to you.

Thank you for reading and sharing as always.
