Recommendation: An intimate look at murder and mental illness

Make a Recommendation Monday [7/6/2020]:

This week the recommendation is a book. All of you who are interested in hearing from someone who directly experienced (and still does) mental illness and the criminal justice system, should consider reading this book. The book is titled "Murder and Misunderstanding: One man's escape from insanity" by Shuvender "Shubi" Sem.

As the title implies, Shubi tells all about a murder that (no spoilers) occurs in his life. Shubi goes back in his life and explains his upbringing, followed by his adolescent years and how those experiences both influenced his life and were influenced by his behaviors. Shubi grew up in Pennsylvania, but spent time living in several other states during his adult years. Shubi is open about his life and shares about the challenges he faced related to his symptoms of delusions and hallucinations.

Later in the book, Shubi details his experiences with the criminal justice system. You'll learn what can happen with people who are mentally ill during the time that they commit a crime, and what outcomes can come about. Shubi ends the book with information about the other side of his experiences. He offers hope and new insights.

By reading this book, you will learn directly from someone's lived experiences what it may be like to experience paranoid schizophrenia, how it can be impacted by one's life, and how society may treat those with that diagnosis or grouping of symptoms. This book is a candid telling of an often shame-ridden and closed-off conversation. Certainly, if you are going to be attending college and will be studying criminal justice, psychology, social work, or sociology, this would be a fantastic book to read and possibly write about for your classes.

Even if you are not someone interested in psychology, criminal justice, mental illness, it is an excellent eye-opening read!

The book is available through Amazon, but if you are interested in reading this book, I'd be happy to lend my copy, just reach out to me! If you have, or plan on reading this, please feel free to comment below your thoughts or questions.
